The Special Groups ( GE ) were small special assault units, formed from 1970 onwards by the Chief Command of the Portuguese Armed Forces in Mozambique , to act in the Overseas War .

Later, units of Special Paratrooper Groups ( GEP ) capable of carrying out airborne operations and units of Special Combat Track Groups ( GEPC ) specialized in tracking terrorists were also formed. In 1974, 84 special groups and 12 special paratrooper groups were operational.
